What is Search Engine Optimization and How Does It Work?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of influencing the organic results that appear in a search engine’s unpaid results. An advertiser, website publisher, or SEO analyst carries out SEO by improving the relevance and volume of their website content and/or its metadata to increase traffic and sales generated by natural search results.

Search engines use various ranking factors based on automated computer analysis, which makes it possible to fine-tune your page to provide a higher click-through rate (CTR) than your competitors. The most important ranking factors are keyword density, keyword positioning, and relevant content length.

Search engine traffic is any traffic inbound to a website that comes from a search engine. There are two main types of search engine traffic: natural or organic and paid or ad. For example, the difference between organic and paid search traffic is when an individual click on a sponsored link versus clicking on relevant organic content directly. Paid search occurs when a third party advertises their product or service on your website and is usually termed ‘Adwords’ for the exact industry terms used by Google Adwords (such as ‘carpet cleaning’) If you are searching for handcrafted woodworkers, you will find many different companies who advertise in the format Google deems will be ranked higher. You may think that you are a small business with the budget of a large corporation, but if you were to advertise through Google Adwords, your ad will still be displayed next to the company that advertises in 100 fewer characters. It is your money being used against your interest.

SEO traffic analysis (also referred to as organic search engine optimization) is the process by which organizations obtain data about organic search actions taken by visitors coming to their sites. This data may be used for tracking activities and identifying patterns in certain areas of interest or functionality. This data can also be useful for finding out how effective current site content actually is in attracting people and directing them to desired action items. SEO data can be used to understand and improve upon the site structure and creating content that is both useful and relevant to search engines.

What are organic rankings?

Organic ranking is a term used in website traffic analysis to refer to a website’s position within the SERPs (search engine result pages).

The three elements of organic rank are:

1) PageRank (PR)

PR measures the strength of a web page’s backlink profile. The higher PR your webpage has compared to other pages in the same niche, the higher you will be shown in search result pages.

2) Domain Authority (DA)

DA measures an organization’s relevance on the web. The higher your Domain Authority, the more likely someone will click on your page to visit. Domain Authority is a score provided by Moz.com that helps you determine the relative importance of a specific domain (a website and its webpages).

3) Content quality, links, keywords, etc.

Content quality is determined by looking at the keyword density and how often keywords are used compared to other relevant terms.

This helps companies discover insights about their content that they can then use to improve their performance in search engines.
